West Central Area at Pillager
The Pillager Huskies hosted the Knights of WCAA to determine who would be the Midwest Blue District champions on a perfect, albeit abnormally warm November night.
The first half was what you’d expect with these two teams that have split their four meetings since this current series began in 2017. Back and forth, and going into the half deadlocked at 20.
Pillager started with the ball but fumbled on the opening play from scrimmage. WCAA took advantage with a 2-yard touchdown run by future UND Fighting Hawk Jaden Norby. The Huskies quickly responded with a 70-yard touchdown drive finished with a terrific play-action pass from Blake Clark to Quentin Laveau. WCAA answered the call with another Jaden Norby touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, it was 12-6 WCAA.
Pillager’s defense got on the board in the 2nd quarter as Hunter Gjovik picked up a fumble and ran in untouched from 35 yards out to tie the game at 12. Then, on the ensuing kickoff, WCAA’s returner had the ball pop out of his hands and Jacob Dixon of the Huskies returned it to the 1-yard line. Griffen Decker punched it in and Pillager grabbed a 20-12 lead with the conversion. Again, WCAA was up to the task to respond, as they took their next drive and tied the score at 20. WCAA threatened to take the lead just before the half, but a great defensive stand by Pillager inside the 10 yard line kept the game square.
WCAA started with the ball in the second half and put the only points on the board in that opening drive. A 58-yard Jordan Lohse run set the table and he was rewarded with a 9-yard td run shortly thereafter. The defenses took control from there, and WCAA was able to hold on for the win. The Huskies fall to 2-3 on the year and will finish the regular season Wednesday night at Roseau on CASH 95.
