Pequot Lakes at Staples-Motley
The 10th-ranked Pequot Lakes traveled to Staples and remained unbeaten on the year and continued their dominance over the Cardinals with a three-game sweep. It was closer than previous years’ matchups as both teams brought plenty of experience into this season.
Pequot Lakes started fast with a 5-0 start in game one. The Cardinals showed resiliency, eventually tying the opener at 10. The momentum didn’t last for the Cards, as Pequot Lakes responded with a 7-1 run and pulled away for a 25-16 win.
After some light back-and-forth to start set two, the Patriots rattled off seven straight points to go up 12-5. The Cardinals couldn’t get a full rally, and the Patriots went up 2-0 with a 25-15 win.
The tables turned to start the third set, as it was the Cardinals flying out to an 8-0 advantage. An ace block got Pequot Lakes on the board, but Staples-Motley didn’t flinch too much. However, the experienced Patriots team steadily cut the lead down, eventually tying it at 18 and taking the lead in the midst of a 15-6 run. The Cardinals briefly snatched the lead again, but the Patriots finished things by scoring 6 of the final 8 points for a 25-22 win and the sweep.
