Ottertail Central at Pillager
Although it was a typical mid-October day with a mix of sun, rain, snow, and gusty winds, it was not a typical outing for the Pillager Huskies as they hosted Ottertail Central. Stalled drives, busted plays, and turnovers contributed to the 22-6 loss that sends the Huskies into the bye week at 1-2 on the season. The excitement started immediately as Pillager’s opening kickoff was a low liner that ricocheted off a front line blocker for OTC and the Huskies recovered. The drive stalled, which set the tone as both teams showed some ability to move the ball, entering opponents territory but turned it over on downs. OTC broke the stalemate in the 2nd quarter on their third drive, after a long pass connection set things up, senior back Drew Durbin plowed in from 2 yards out with less than a minute left in the first half.
Pillager tried to answer the big play but threw an interception, and OTC took a 8-0 lead into the break. The 2nd half started, amazingly, just like the first. OTC’s kick was a bouncer that the Huskies couldn’t scoop up and the Bulldogs returned the favor of stealing a possession out of the gate. They didn’t convert that drive into points, and with two long drives from each team, we entered the 4th with the score still 8-0. But OTC was threatening, and it didn’t take long. The first play of the 4th quarter saw Bricker Bladow find a wide open lane for 20 yards and a score, with the conversion giving OTC a 16-0 advantage. After the second interception thrown by the Huskies, OTC put it away with a 21-yard scamper by quarterback Tanner Arndt.
The Huskies weren’t to be denied completely, putting together a late scoring drive where Blake Clark found Tytan Skeesick for six. The Huskies are now 1-2 and have their bye week, set to return to action October 30th at Crookston. OTC is also 1-2 on the year.
