McGregor at Carlton/Wrenshall
It was a cold, windy, and snowy afternoon in Esko as the McGregor Mercuries took on the Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors and lost, falling to 0-3 in the 2020 season.
The scoring got started on the Raptors’ first possession when they got the ball on the Mercs’ 45 yard line and took 10 plays to work their way to the end zone via a 2 yard TD run by Zeke Rousseau. Kristian Herman added the PAT to make the score 7-0. A 3 and out by the Mercs led to the Raptors getting the ball on the Mercs’ 36 yard line for their second possession and wasted no time getting back to the end zone, taking just 3 plays to score, with Kyle Siiter being the beneficiary of a 5 yard rushing TD to extend the lead to 13-0; the PAT was blocked and that’s where the score stood for the rest of the first half.
The second half got started with a big kick return by Siiter to set the Raptors up with great field position at the Mercs’ 39, and they took advantage once again. 8 plays later they added another touchdown, this time courtesy of a 4 yard run, again by Siiter. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the Raptors led 19-0.
The Mercs struck back on their first possession of the second half. After being stymied in the run game all afternoon, senior Drew Dean broke open a 52 yard rushing TD to give the Mercs their first score of the day to make the score 19-6. Unfortunately, that was the only spark their offense was able to supply in an otherwise listless afternoon on offense.
The final scoring drive of the day was again the result of stellar field position for the Raptors as they got the ball on the Mercs’ 26 yard line and took 5 plays to score with a 1 yard QB sneak from Sam Ojibway. After Herman added the PAT, the score was 26-6 in favor of the Raptors and remained that way for the rest of the affair.
