Oklee, MN — The Red Lake County Central Mustangs hosted the 7-2 Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds in only their third home game of the regular season on Tuesday night. Mahnomen/Waubun played their style of basketball early on getting easy fast break points and got out to an early lead that felt like it could go down hill quickly for RLCC.
The Mustangs got Mahnomen/Waubun’s best player Sophomore Guard Kendra Syverson, into first half foul trouble forcing her to sit the last 9 minutes of the first half on the bench. But the Thunderbirds did what all good teams do and found scoring in other places such as 11 first half points from Sophomore Alaina Bevins and 11 first half points off the bench from Junior Forward Sunshine Englund. RLCC Trailed the entire first half but went into the halftime only down 47-34.
In the second half the Thunderbirds got back to full strength with Syverson coming back into the game opening up the second half with 4 quick points extending the Thunderbird lead to 17 and it eventually ballooned to 21. Just when all hope looked lost for RLCC, Mahnomen/Waubun started to go cold from the field and Senior Kia Bachand kept the Mustangs in it scoring 24 of her game high 32 points in the second half.
Mahnomen/Waubun was able to cling to their 3 point lead with under a minute to go when Kendra Syverson fouled Cari Bachand on a 3-point attempt that sent Bachand to the line to tie the game and fouling Syverson out of the contest. But Bachand would go onto miss all three free throws. Alaina Bevins then went to the line for Mahnomen/Waubun to shoot bonus free throws to seal the game with 6 seconds remaining. Bevins would miss the first free throw that got rebounded by RLCC and an outlet pass to Sophomore Forward Marissa Thomas threw one up from just past the volleyball line to tie the game. The shot had a perfect line but would bank to hard and rim out leaving the Thunderbirds with the 69-66 victory.
The Thunderbirds improve to 8-2 on the season and will play the NCE/U-H Titans on Friday. While the Mustangs fall to 2-7 and will travel to Clearbrook-Gonvick to take on the Bears.
