Hope, ND — Christmas came four days early for the Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page boys’ basketball squad on Tuesday night when the Spartans snagged their first win of season, defeating Lakota in the Hustler Dome.
After booming out to a 22-7 first-quarter lead thanks to a 12-0 run, the Spartans defeated the Lakota Raiders 72-39. For the first time since 2016, Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page won’t start a season 0-4, and the Spartans have gained their first traces of the momentum on the young season.
Senior Spartan guard Owen Zerface led all scorers with 20 points, unwrapping 13 scores in the second half. Senior forward Blake Jacbosen ripped right through the Lakota defense alongside Zerface, as he put up 15 points of his own.
Lakota found a small surge with a 7-0 run to begin the second quarter, but it wasn’t enough to amass any lead. The Raiders never led during Tuesday night. Freshman forward Ross Thompson led the team with 11 points — the only Raider to score in double digits. Senior forward Brandt Ferguson scored eight points, while freshman guard Jaxson Baumgarn did the same coming off the bench.
Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page (1-3) gets a break until Jan. 5 when the Spartans head to Mayville (0-0). The Raiders (1-1) waits until Jan. 4 to take on North Star/Starkweather (1-2) in Lakota, North Dakota.
