Hatton/Northwood at Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page
Finley, ND — A Class B, Region II upset in the making turned into a bittersweet Finley-Sharon gymnasium finale when Hatton/Northwood forced double overtime to defeat Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page on Friday night.
The Thunder took down the Spartans 80-74 under the requirement of two extra-curricular periods. It took all five of Hatton/Northwood’s starters to score in double figures to upend the upset bid by the underdog Spartans after FSHP had led all night. After leading at halftime 34-33 and 54-49 heading into the fourth, regulation ended in a 64-64 deadlock.
The Spartans were 44 feet away from closing out the Thunder while leading 70-66 after Owen Zerface sinked a right-elbow mid-range jumper to pad the lead to four with 35 seconds remaining in the first OT. Moments later, junior guard Colton Konschak pulled up from quarter-court and sank a momentum-swinging trifecta to baffle the Spartans. Senior FSHP forward Ryan Tuite sank two free hit two free throws to extend the lead to 72-69, but Konschak had more tricks in his arsenal.
With 11 seconds left, Konschak awkwardly pulled up from 20 feet away over FSHP sophomore forward Xyler Carlson looking to draw a foul. It drew a three points and a tie instead, as the shot was nothing but net and wet. Once the Thunder forced double OT at 72-72, the Spartans ran out of steam while Hatton/Northwood pulled away,
Hatton/Northwood junior forward Kaleb Braun scored 10 points with three rebounds while freshman forward Derek Carpenter snagged rebounds and matched his teammate. Colton Konschak scored a team-high 23 points and found five rebounds, complementing junior guard teammate Kelby Azure’s 21 points and 10 rebounds. Azure fouled out in first OT, but senior forward Carter Myron also scored 10 points — nine coming from 3-pointers — while finding four rebounds.
Senior FSHP guard Owen Zerface accumulated a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as did sophomore forward Landon Koenig with 26 points and 10 more rebounds. Senior guard Dalton Stein netted a season-high 11 points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Xyler Carlson put up 10 points and tore down one rebound. Senior forward Ryan Tuite scored four points and took down two rebounds.
