Hunter, ND — In a span of 24 hours from Thursday night to Friday evening, the Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page girls’ basketball team faced two of the best teams in Class B, going 0-2 in the process and falling to 2-5 on the season.
Northern Cass defeated FSHP 72-25 thanks to a stifling first quarter by the Jaguars. The Spartans fell to an early 23-6 lead in the first period and never found their way back into the game. A quick bucket to begin the game up 2-0 by freshman forward Ragan Zerface was the only lead FSHP took in the contest, as the Jaguars led 43-11 at half.
The Jaguars went on runs of 7-0 and 8-0 in the first quarter and amassed a 14-0 run from the late first period into the second. Northern Cass has Halley Crockett to thank for a chunk of its scoring, as the sophomore guard led the Jaguars with 15 points. Sophomore forward Emma Lucas netted nine points.
Northern Cass freshman center Josie Jensen scored eight points off the bench late in the game, as freshman forward Ellie Lucas scored six. Junior guard Abby Richman, a starter, found six points on Friday night, as did senior forward Morgan Nelson. Sophomore forward Noelle Erickson scored three points while junior guard Maddy Nwetwig scored four.
Zerface scored her daily 16 points for the Spartans. The next closest behind Zerface was senior guard Marissa Mitchell with five points. Senior guard Beth Mehus played through an injured right hand and scored two, the same amount as junior forward Hailey Schlotfeldt.
The Spartans (2-5) (0-4) play again on Monday 7:30 p.m. at May-Port-CG (3-5). The Jaguars (5-2) remain in Hunter for a Tuesday date with LaMoure/Litchville-Marion (4-1) at 7:30 p.m.
