Buxton, ND — After an uncharacteristic season-opening loss to Kindred, the Hillsboro-Central Valley Burros found their usual winning ways after defeating Drayton-Valley Edinburg on Thursday night.
Even with a new squad that is young in experience, the Burros pulled out a 51-42 victory over their Class B, Region 2 rivals in the Titans. Despite nearly every HCV varsity player being an upperclassman, freshman forward Jacob Brandt led his team with 18 points off the bench.
The Burros outscored the Titans 15-5 thanks to a 12-0 run in the final three minutes of the period. Drayton-Valley Edinburg didn’t go quietly, however, nearly matching the Burros in the second quarter with 14 points of their own. HCV put another 15 spot on the board and led 30-19 at halftime.
DVE senior forward Gage Pollestad willed his team to a comeback bid in the second half, scoring 21 points on the night as the Titans once cut it to a four-point game late. Despite a resurgence, HCV senior guard/forward Jackson Anderson came up clutch from the free-throw line, going 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the fourth quarter, finishing with 12 points.
The Burros (1-1) welcome Richland for a 7:30 p.m. game next Tuesday, while the Titans (1-1) travel to Park River-Fordville-Lankin for another 7:30 p.m. bout on Monday.
