Pillager at Crosby-Ironton

November 16, 2020 0

In what was a late-added match for the 2020 season, it was a section showdown as the Pillager Huskies visited the Crosby-Ironton Rangers.

The teams entered is the bottom two teams in the South Subsection standings of 8AA, with the victor most likely avoiding undefeated Pequot Lakes in the first round of playoffs which are still a couple weeks away.

The first set was predictably back and forth until the Rangers, trailing 6-4, put together a 9-1 run to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Rangers pushed the lead up to ten, and the Huskies couldn’t put the big comeback run together as CI grabbed the opener 25-16.

The second set followed suit, as there were a couple early ties, but once the Rangers took the lead after it was tied at five, they stayed out front. Pillager made a better run towards the end, cutting a nine-point lead to five, but a service error gave a free point and some momentum back to C-I, and the Rangers took game two 25-18.

It appeared C-I would walk as they shot out to a 6-0 lead in set three behind some very tough serving from senior Jacey Rydberg. The Huskies recovered to cut the lead to 6-4, but the Rangers answered to push the lead to 11-5 and slowly extended the lead throughout to finish the sweep 25-16. The Huskies had trouble with the aggressive Rangers’ serving all night, as C-I piled up 13 aces. The Rangers improve to 3-8 on the year and will host Aitkin Tuesday on KKIN-FM 94.3. The Huskies fall to 1-9 and will host Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday.
