East Grand Forks, MN — The Crookston girls’ basketball crew extended its perfect road record after closing out the Green Wave thanks to a 26-2 run to end the game on Thursday night at East Grand Forks High School.
The Pirates defeated the Green Wave 52-24 after EGF had taken the lead early in the second half. Crookston went up 10-0 early in the first half, but the Green Wave battled back to a 21-15 halftime deficit and eventually took a 24-23 lead just minutes into the second half. Then Crookston kicked its offense into fifth gear.
Senior Emma Borowicz manned the helm for her Pirates, scoring a game-high 17 points and snagging four rebounds. Freshman Halley Winjum netted 10 points of her own with five rebounds. Crookston turned the ball over 19 times, but only four came in the second half. Junior Hayden Winjum only scored one point but cleaned the window nine times for the rebound.
East Grand Forks also turned it over 19 times in this contest, 11 of which taking place after halftime and contributing to Crookston’s 26-2 run. Senior Kaydyn Melquist led her team with eight points and five rebounds. Junior Brynn Havis followed closely behind with six points of her own. The Pirates out-rebounded EGF 31-17.
The Green Wave (1-3) next play Roseau (0-3) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Roseau, Minnesota. Crookston (5-1) battles with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (1-3) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Crookston, Minnesota. Both games are Section 8AA North contests.
