(Aitkin, MN) — Aitkin County was named of the 15 Minnesota cities and counties to receive portions of the $34.6 million from the Department of Employment and Economic Development through their Small Cities Coronavirus Community Development Block Grant Program. Aitkin County will be using the $4,823,654 toward Broadband Improvements in hard to reach areas that struggle with basic internet connectivity.
Aitkin County Economic Development Coordinator Mark Jeffers spoke to us about these funds coming thanks to the collaboration with Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative.
The need for broadband improvements did present themselves when the COVID-19 Pandemic forced many to work and go to school from home.
Support from Aitkin County came immediately as the broadband expansion is ever changing.
The time from when the grant funding was awarded to completions of the project, is a span of only 2 ½ years.
Jeffers did also say that this project will need time to develop but Aitkin County and MLEC have already started.
