(Aitkin County) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is considering requests from Kennecott Exploration Company and Vermillion Gold, Incorporated for negotiated nonferrous metallic minerals leases, as both companies have been exploring the minerals for years.
According to the DNR, Kennecott holds a number of state metallic mineral leases in Aitkin and Carlton counties and has requested to add one 40-acre parcel to an existing lease in Aitkin County. Vermillion is also asking to add three leases covering 866 acres in St Louis County.
If the leases are granted, the revenues will benefit Aitkin and St Louis counties, Haugen Township, the City’s or Gilbert and Virginia, their respective school districts, and public schools statewide. A portion of the revenues will also pay costs for the administration and management of state mineral resources.
More information from the DNR on leasing state lands and minerals, public input opportunities, and more can be found on the DNR’s website.
