Representative Marquart Comments of House Budget Proposal
St. Paul, MN — The Minnesota House of Representatives, Senate, and Governor Walz have now all released their proposed budget targets for the next biennium, and each is a little different. District 4B Representative Paul Marquart reviewed some of the provisions of the House proposal, which tallies up to about $52.5 billion, during his visit on the Kaleidoscope Program last Friday. The plan calls for $721.7 million in new education spending, $120 million for higher education and $50 million for early childhood. For health and human services, the proposed increase is $323 million. Representative Marquart says much of increased spending relates back to COVID-19.
While the House and Governor have similar budget plans, Marquart says perhaps the biggest difference will be in the tax bill.
The American Rescue Plan will bring several billion dollars of additional funding for the state as well, but Marquart says they are having a hard time trying to figure out how to incorporate that into their budget because they still don’t know how it can be spent.
The Minnesota Legislature will reconvene after the Easter Break on April 6th.
