Red River Ranked 4th Best Place to Fish in United States
Halstad, MN — If you to compile a list of the top 100 place to fish in the United States, chances are you would suspect several area fisheries to be included in that list, including Lake of the Woods, Devils Lake, Mille Lacs, and Leech Lake. And you would be right. However, what you might not expect is that the 4th best place to fish in US is right here in our backyard: The Red River. That’s right! According to fishing company Abu Garcia, the Red River, which serves as the border between North Dakota and Minnesota, is one of the best fisheries in the United States. And while it may come as a shock to some, Red River Catfishing Guide Brad Durick isn’t surprised one bit.
While it’s mostly known for it’s Trophy Channel Catfish, the Red River offers a variety of other fish species to catch, including walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass, and northern pike. Durick says the beauty of the Red River is you can catch about anything just by casting a worm.
Durick is hoping to get an early start to the fishing season on the Red River with plans to drop his boat in the water this weekend. Water levels at this time of year on the Red are usually well above flood stage, but this year are at very fishable levels. Durick, one of the only full-time catfish guides on the Red River, says the low water levels will make for a hot start to the season.
