Demolition Begins on Former Gary School
Gary, MN — Down it goes! Demolition of the former Norman County East Elementary began this week and is expected to be completed sometime within the next two weeks. Gary Mayor Buck Engen says demolition began on the newest addition on Monday and they will work their way to the oldest wing as they work on asbestos removal.
Prior to being the Norman County East Elementary, the building served as the Gary High School and Elementary until the early 90s. The demolition is bittersweet for Engen, who was one of the last classes to graduate in the building as a Gary Bulldog.
Not all of the former school will be demolished. The city of Gary is keeping the gym and roughly a 60×60 portion to the south that includes the locker rooms, kitchen, and a handicap bathroom. The remaining portion will be repurposed as a gym and events center. Fundraising efforts for that remodel and repurposing will likely begin this spring or later this year.
