White Earth Investment Initiative Offering Free Tax Services
Mahnomen, MN — Free tax services are now once again available through the White Earth Investment Initiative to those of low to moderate income on the White Earth Reservation. The White Earth Community Tax Service opened in the Events Center at the Shooting Star Casino on January 25th. One big difference this year is taxpayers will initially meet with White Earth Investment Initiative staff to drop off their tax information and pick up their completed returns, but the rest will be done virtually according to WEII Tax Director Sue Trnka.
Along with how they prepare your taxes, Trnka states the pandemic could potentially have some impact on your return depending on you were impacted this year.
The free tax service is available to those with $60,000 or less annual adjusted gross income. They also cannot prepare returns for rental income, CRP payments, or a number of other uncommon returns. For those who do not meet the income guidelines or would like to prepare their taxes on their own, Trnka says they can provide them an online tool for free tax preparation as well.
To book an appointment, please 1-800-752-6579. Visitors to the tax site are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. WEII personnel will be following all federal, state, and local COVID-19 guidelines, including frequent cleaning of tax stations. Taxpayers are asked to reschedule their tax appointments if they are not feeling well.
Taxpayers should be sure to bring their photo IDs, originals or copies of Social Security cards for all persons listed on the tax return, and all tax documents (e.g., W2s, 1099s, etc.) along to their first appointment.
