Year in Review – Gary Youth Step up big in 2020
The youth of Gary stepped up again in a big way in 2020. The Gary Mayor’s Junior Council was formed in recent years as a way for youth in the community to have a voice for other youth in the city and provide fun and safe ways to keep them occupied. Keeping kids occupied in 2020 wasn’t easy either as COVID cancelled many of their events. This summer the Junior Council brought up the idea to host outdoor movie nights, which Gary Mayor Buck Engen says was a great success.
Where the junior council, who are all middle school-aged, really shined was when they brought forward a proposal to the city council for what to do with the money they raised. Mayor Engen says the junior council, who was very formal in their pitch, wanted the money to go towards planting more trees in town.
And while not associated with the Junior Council, Engen notes there was another young leader who stepped up in a big way out at the Gary Pines.
The influence of the Gary youth will soon be showcased well above the city. The City of Gary water tower will be painted this summer with a design that was crafted from Mina Kjono, who was in 3rd grade when she created the design.
