DNR seeking comments on Grindstone Dam removal

(Hinckley, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking the public’s input on topics to be added in the environmental impact statement (EIS) for the proposed removal of the Grindstone Dam in Hinckley.
The EIS will help describe the potential environmental effects of the proposed dam removal. The dam is in poor condition and is a safety hazard, while being a barrier to the passage of fish and other aquatic wildlife in the Grindstone River.
What the DNR is proposing is to remove the Dam on the Grindstone River and reconnect the river channel above and below the dam. The 26.6 acre Grindstone Reservoir, which is a public water basin, would be permanently removed.
Public comments can be written and sent by email or by mail to Becky Horton, EIS project manager, Environmental Review Unit, DNR Ecological and Water Resources Division, 500 Lafayette Road, St Paul, MN 55155-4025. Comments will be accepted until 4:30pm, Thursday, November 12th.
An online presentation and comment period will also be taking place Thursday, November 5th from 6-7:30pm. More information can be found on the Grindstone Dam Removal Project page on the DNR’s website.
