Aitkin at Pequot Lakes
Aitkin’s early lead drifted away but the Gobblers were able to pull out a late 13-12 victory over the Pequot Lakes Patriots in Game 2 of their Doubleheader Wednesday.
Patience at the plate paid off early for the Gobblers with RBI bases-loaded walks for Gus Sanford and Tanner Hills, with another run scoring on a wild pitch from Pequot’s Caden Nelson for a 3-0 lead. The Patriots cut the lead down to 3-2 despite getting 4 consecutive walks and 5 in the first 6 batters in the Bottom of the 1st.
Both teams 1 run each in the 2nd before Aitkin lead 9-3 in the Top of the 4th, punctuated by a run-scoring groundout and single from James Erickson. The Patriots tied the game at 9-9 with 2-run doubles from Andrew Villareal and Grant Loge, and a 2-run single from Caleb Toftness.
Tied at 10-10 after 5 innings, Aitkin notched 2 runs with the bases loaded thanks Carson Kullhem’s single and Craig Ashton’s hit by pitch to lead 12-11. Pequot answered back with RBI single Conner Quale in the Bottom of the 6th to tied the game at 12-12.
The Gobblers were able to steal another run for the final lead in the 7th with Tanner Hills putting a ball in the outfield and the prevailing winds pushing it out of the glove of the fielder, allowing Gus Sanford to score.
After taking over for the final 2 innings, Carson Kullhem picked up the win on the mound with 4 strikeouts and allowed 1 run off 1 hit. Jesse Goettig started and went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs off 2 hits and 7 walks with 4 strikeouts. Kullhem also went 3-for-6 with and RBI and 4 runs scored. Craig Ashton also added an RBI sacrifice fly for Aitkin.
Grant Loge took the loss for Pequot Lakes in relief after pitching 2 innings, giving up 3 runs off1 hit and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts and 2 hit batters. Andrew Villareal finished 3-for-4 with a double, walk, 3 RBIs, and run scored. Toftness finished with 3 RBIs and Loge added 2.
Aitkin improves to 4-0 on the year and Pequot Lakes falls to 0-3.
