The Ogilvie Lions hosted the McGregor Mercuries for the season opener on Friday, jumping out to a 28-0 lead on the Mercs and coasting to the finish line to win 28-14.
After a quiet, scoreless first quarter, the Lions started the second quarter with a 13 play, 89 yard drive capped off by a 6 yard rushing touchdown by RB Ethan Warren to make the score 6-0. Three short drives later, and the Lions took much less time when they got the ball on the Mercs’ 40 yard line and WR Beau Burk scampered for a 40 yard rushing touchdown out of the wildcat on the first play of the drive. FB Dylan Nelson added the two point conversion to make the score 14-0. Before the half was over, the Lions again took advantage of good field positioning when they got the ball on the Mercs’ 30 and took 5 plays to make it to the end zone, courtesy of an 18 yard TD strike from freshman QB Colby Milbradt, who filled in for senior captain QB Brady Harlan due to his mother testing positive for COVID, to WR Beau Burk, with little time remaining in the 2nd half to make the lead 20-0.
The 3rd quarter passed with no more scoring, but the fourth quarter began with a bang, with the Lions’ Beau Burk lining up in the wildcat once again early in the quarter and promptly taking off for a 55 yard rushing touchdown; Burk topped it off with a jump ball catch on a fade pattern from Milbradt to extend the lead to 28-0.
The Mercs turned things around after that, rattling off an 11 play, 80 yard touchdown drive that ended with RB Drew Dean punching it in from one yard out to cut the deficit to 28-6. The Mercs then recovered a successful onside kick attempt off the foot of Dean and marched down the field once again, going 45 yards in 9 plays with QB Willie Glunz firing a 4 yard touchdown pass to TE Ethan Bohn and then sneaking it in for the 2 point conversion to make the game 28-14. McGregor takes on Cromwell/Floodwood next Thursday.
