Isle at McGregor
A matchup that has historically produced a lot of offense did so once again on Friday, but for most of the game, only for one team. The McGregor Mercuries (1-3) earned their first win of the 2020 season over the Isle Huskies (0-4), who still remain in pursuit of their first win.
The scoring got started on the Mercs’ first drive with a 46 yard touchdown connection between Willie Glunz and Drew Dean. The Huskies answered with a 10 play, 68 yard drive that was capped off by a 2 yard run by quarterback Teagen Haggberg to knot things up at 8-8. The Mercs again wasted no time to score, using just 3 plays to go 55 yards with Dean scoring from 15 yards out on a run to make it 16-8. The first quarter ended close, with the Huskies trailing 24-14 to the Mercs, and it looked like the night was shaping up to be a classic barnburner for both sides.
It didn’t work out that way. The Mercuries were in control from then on, with Dean scoring on runs from 26 and 29 yards out as part of his monster night to give McGregor a 38-14 lead with 4:38 left in the 2nd quarter, and McGregor’s defense managed to shut down Haggberg and the Huskies. Another stop by the defense gave the ball back to the Mercuries and Jacob Metzen scored from 2 yards out to make it 46-14 at halftime.
By the time it was midway through the 3rd quarter, Metzen scored again to make the score 53-14 in favor of McGregor, and the mercy rule came into effect with coaches Bob Staska and Stan Miller agreeing to run the clock out. Teagen Haggberg scored two more touchdowns, one passing and one running, but it was too little too late, as the Mercuries ended up securing the 53-28 win.
