Hankinson Co-op 10, Hillsboro-Central Valley 1

The Hankinson Pirates area softball cooperative used steady offensive production and solid defense to down the Hillsboro-Central Valley Burros 10-1 in a North Dakota Class B Region 1 softball matchup at the Olsen Softball Complex in Hillsboro.

The Pirates struck for 2 runs in the top of the first to take a lead they would never relinquish. Singles by Savannah Falk, Mary Rupp, and Kylee Falk with a sprinkling of stolen bases scored Savannah Falk and Rupp for a quick 2-0 lead. Hankinson put 3 more on the board in the third inning on RBI singles from Kylee Falk and Halle Gaukler.

HCV got off the schneid with a run in the 4th that was aided by a short lapse of control from otherwise stellar Pirate pitcher Kirstan Loewen. Carsi Hatlestad worked a one out walk from Loewen. Serina Klose followed with a single to advance Hatlestad to second. Two more walks to Rachel Barnett and Sanna Kritzberger pushed Hatlestad across the plate to make the score 5-1.

In the top of the 5th Hankinson decided to break out to the whooping sticks. More precisely, Kya Mauch decided to take the game into her own hands. With Rupp on base with a single, Mauch turned on a pitch and sent it soaring over the left field fence. Then in the 6th, Savannah Falk and Rupp singled in front of Mauch who sent a moon shot towering over the fence in left again to make the score 10-1 and close the scoring for the game.

For the Pirates, Rupp reached base 4 times on 3 hits and an error and scored each time. Mauch’s 2 bombs gave her 5 RBIs for the game. Aside from her one lapse, Loewen was rock steady, notching 10 strikeouts.

The Burros were led by Kailee Kittleson and her 3 singles. Despite the lopsided score, Klose pitched her best game of the season so far. She mowed down 12 Pirate hitters on strikes and only walked 2 batters. Some tough luck plays by the Burro defense put a damper on what was otherwise a stellar performance by Klose.
