Fergus Falls at Northern Lakes
The Northern Lakes Lightning girls finally had their home opener, but it turned into a third straight loss to start the season as they fell to the Otters of Fergus Falls 4-0.
The Lightning ladies had a few good opportunities in the first period, but were stopped cold by Lexi Metcalf in net for Fergus Falls. The Otters tallied a pair of goals in the first period and were up 2-0.
The 2nd period saw the Otters dominate the offensive zone, and push the lead to 4-0, including a backbreaking goal with only ten seconds remaining in the period.
That would be the final margin, as the third period saw good scoring chances by both clubs, but the goaltenders were up to the task to keep the scoreboard clean. Sophomore Kate Stephens for the Lightning stopped 33 of the 37 shots she faced, while Metcalf preserved the shutout with 16 saves.
The win by Fergus Falls is their eighth straight over the Lightning, and they improve to 2-3 on the season. Northern Lakes falls to 0-3 and will host the second of their six game homestand Friday vs. Morris-Benson.
