Aitkin at Pequot Lakes
The Pequot Lakes Patriots made it a clean sweep for the season as they hosted the Aitkin Gobblers. But it wasn’t that easy.
The Patriots led wire-to-wire in set one, but couldn’t pull away as two separate 7-point leads were cut down by the Gobblers before the Patriots sealed the win 25-20.
Set two was all Patriots. After an early 1-1 tie, the Patriots kept the Gobblers out of system and cruised to a 25-7 win.
Early in set three it appeared a sweep was eminent. Pequot Lakes had a 6-0 run to go up 8-2. But the Gobblers showed their resiliency, as they trailed 11-6 and put together a 8-1 run to take their first lead of the night. The teams then kept trading mini runs. Pequot Lakes 5-1 to go up 17-15; Aitkin 3-1 to tie it at 18. The Patriots scored the next three to go up 21-18, and the Gobblers answered with a 6-1 run to give Aitkin set point as they threatened to give the Patriots only their third set loss of the season. But the Patriots responded by scoring three straight and eventually getting the sweep with a 27-25 win.
