Detroit Lakes, MN -- The ice will be going away quickly on Little Detroit Lake Thursday in the form of 2ft by 4ft blocks starting today and continuing through Friday. Those blocks will be used to form the first ever Detroit Lakes Ice Palace. The original plan was for Detroit Lakes to provide the ice for the proposed “World’s Largest Ice Castle” to be built in the Twin Cities, but when plans fell though, the Detroit Lakes community rallied together and decided they would build their own fortress of sorts. The first block of ice will be harvested at 11am Thursday and the actual construction will begin as soon as the harvest is complete, according to Amy Stearns of the Ice Harvest Committee.
The opening party and grand lighting of the Ice Palace will take place on February 8th, which is also the kickoff of the annual Polarfest in Detroit Lakes as well.

Whether its Polar Fest, the Ice Palace, Water Carnival, or anyone of the year round events, Stearns commends the Detroit Lakes community for making this such a fun place to live and visit.
