Hawley Foreign Exchange Student to Continue Stay for Senior Year
Hawley, MN — During this week’s Hawley School News Program, we got the unique opportunity to once again catch up with Ukrainian foreign exchange student Daniella Zubarieva as she closes out her Junior year in high school while Russia occupies her hometown of Mariupol. While she says there is still a great deal of uncertainty, the good news is that her family was able to safely get out of Ukraine and they are back in constant communication.
Daniella has decided to continue her education in America and stay in Hawley for her senior year and is still pondering her college options.
Over this past year, Daniella has been put in a unique situation as a local voice for Ukraine. She says it sometimes makes for awkward situations or conversations, but ultimately most people are trying to be supportive.
While the support from the Hawley and surrounding communities for the people of Ukraine has been outstanding, unfortunately there are others trying to take advantage of the situation. Daniella says between scammers and the Russian occupation of Mariupol, it has been difficult to get financial help to the people of her hometown.
Bell Bank has recently awarded Daniella a $22,000 donation towards her charity, Help for Mariupol, Ukraine, and her scholarship towards a summer camp.
