Ada, MN — The Ada-Borup-West Community Education will be offering an opportunity for students and adults to learn the basics of refereeing basketball with hopes of helping fill some of the demand for more officials. The program, which will be held next Monday, November 22nd at 6:30pm, will provide individuals with the basic techniques needed to officiate the game and will include both classroom and on the court instruction. Ada-Borup-West teacher and local official Mike Erickson will lead the course. He says the individuals who participate will leave with the knowledge to officiate lower-level basketball games, such as weekend tournaments and junior high games, and can use that experience to make their way up the ranks.

Erickson has been officiating games since he was in high school and continues to do so. He enjoys the camaraderie of working with other officials as well as the extra cash that comes with it.

While having to deal with unruly fans is part of the gig, Erickson notes that a strong majority of his experiences refereeing are positive.

While the officiating industry has been mostly male dominated, Erickson strongly encourages females and people of all backgrounds to consider the opportunity. Please contact Josh Carlson at the Ada-Borup-West school, 218-784-5300, for more information or to register.

The cost for the Intro to Basketball Refereeing course is $20
