Gary, MN Woman Charged with Multiple Counts of Felony Theft
Ada, MN — A Gary, MN woman is facing multiple counts of felony level theft after embezzling more than $300,000 from a former employer. 41-year-old Melissa Young made her First Appearance in Norman County District Court on Wednesday where she is being charged with Theft-By Check, Theft-Divert Corporate Property, Theft-By Swindle, and Financial Transaction Card Fraud. If convicted, she faces up to 70 years in prison and fines up to $320,000.
According to court documents, Young, who was a part time payroll employee at Star of the North Bean until June of 2019, allegedly embezzled approximately $305,000 between April 2016 and June 2019. Documents indicate Young, who was making $19 an hour, gave herself a pay raise to $26 an hour and was paying herself in excess of 80 hours of work each two weeks. She also began giving herself extra payments. In total, she gave herself 29 extra payments adding up to just under $56,000. She also used a company card to pay off a collection agency. She made 5 transactions on the card totaling $21,160. More investigating showed Young has made unauthorized transactions that totaled $305,424.07.
When questioned by financial investigators, Young stated that the transactions were loans, but did also admit to having a gambling problem. A majority of the money was spent at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen or used to pay off collection agencies hired by the casino. Between 2015 and 2019, Young put in more than $2.2 million at the nearby casino, but only got back approximately $1.85 million. In total, she lost $358,176.
