Farm Equipment Fire Chances Increase with Continued Drought
Fargo, ND — With prolonged drought conditions across all of North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, the risk of equipment fires can increase, especially when it comes to baling forages for hay. Kindred Fire and Rescue Chief Rich Schock talks more about how these conditions can accelerate this risk for fire when baling.
There are a number of things farmers can do to prevent a fire from happening out in the field. NDSU Extension Farm and Ranch Safety Coordinator Angie Johnson say a simple walk-around and visual inspection of the equipment is often the key.
Johnson highly recommends taking the time to blow off your equipment as well during the baling season.
You should also inspect your hoses and belts for wear and tear. And lastly, Johnson encourages farmers to have a fire plan in place and have an extinguisher handy.
And Schock reminds folks to immediately call 9-1-1 as soon a problem arises so that they can be enroute and on their way to assist as soon as possible.
