Representative Marquart Introduces Bill to Create Local Property Tax Transparency & Accountability
St. Paul, MN — District 4B Representative Paul Marquart had a hearing this week on a bill he believes will create increased accountability and transparency to local taxpayers. House File 0496 would establish a Minnesota Property Taxpayer’s Day, require additional budget information to be sent with proposed property tax statements, and create a citizen’s property tax advisory requirement for all Cities and Counties with a population of 500 or greater. Representative Marquart says the Property Taxpayer’s Day would create a uniformed Truth-In Taxation day for all cities.
In addition to the proposed tax levy, Marquart notes that this bill would require cities, counties, and schools to send out transparent budget summaries to taxpayers.
And the final element of Marquart’s proposed bill is the establishment of the Citizen’s Property Tax Advisor Committee, which provides more public input in establishing a tax levy.
Representative Marquart, who chairs the House Tax Committee, estimates that property taxes bring in $10.8 Billion a year in revenue for the state.
