Minnesota DNR in search of Black Spruce Cones
Press Release obtained from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:
(Minnesota) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is looking for help collecting the cones needed to help fill spruce seed orders for this spring’s 2021 reforestation efforts. Seeds from the state forest nursery are used to reforest about 6,000 acres of black spruce in Minnesota each year.
Hundreds of bushels of cones are needed within the next few weeks. D-N-R Forestry silviculturist Mike Reinikainen ((RINE-a-kine-en)) explains how you can help.
The DNR can direct people to where they can find black spruce cones and will purchase the collected cones. This year’s price is $85 per bushel. Cones may be collected on your own property or on state forest land.
